Mortal and Immortal Soul

Last month, I had the chance to meet a sincere devotee of the Goddess, who, like others, came from her country to Hellas, to find the traces of the Goddess and walk in the places She walked in antiquity. We went to some important archaeological sites and later, at night we sat in a local restaurant to eat. Like in antiquity, so as today, we started to discuss on the history, the mysteries and the philosophy of ancient Hellas. At some point I started to explain why there is evil in the world, when the universe has been created by the Ultimate God, who is agathos (= ultimately good). I said that even our true nature is divine, we have two parts. This seemed to be strange, so I am going to present here some basic platonic teachings on the mortal soul from the dialogue Timaios and later on the immortal soul.

Neoplatonism

Neoplatonism (νεοπλατωνισμός) is a term which describes the Neoplatonic Philosophy and it is a development of Plato's (Πλάτων) metaphysical teachings and religious system. The neoplatonic current was the main philosophical school of the late antiquity. This philosophical movement begins in the 3rd century A.C. with Plotinos (Πλωτίνος) who was one of the most important representatives of the Hellenic philosophy and the founder of Neoplatonism.

The Life of Plotinos

Plotinos (204 – 270 A.C.) is one of the greatest philosophers of antiquity and his name is spoken in the same breath with the name of Plato. His philosophical system still alive, never stopped to inspire and influence people from his time until today. His philosophical thought influenced mainly by Plato shows and explains the relationship of the man with the God and the human nature with the divine.

Why Atheism is a Disease

Someone brought to my attention that atheism is considered disease by Plato. This phrase has caused many misconceptions and negative criticism and it is important before forming an opinion about a subject or a person, we need to be sure that we understand the concept of which someone speaks – and in our case Plato in the current of Platonism. This article is not about to offend anyone or pass judgement on anyone's choice. This article is a commentary on Plato's opinion.

Plato in his book Laws writes that atheism is a disease. This article attempts a brief explanation of his viewpoint. In his book we read:

The Beauty and the Gods

The beauty (of the god) is unique; a beauty above any beauty. (The god) bears beauty and he makes it more beautiful with the excess of beauty flowing from him, the beginning and the end of beauty. As a source of beauty, everything that comes from him is beautiful. - Plotinos VI.7

Platonic Axiochos on Death

Socrates explains that death is not an experience accompanied with the loss of someone's existence. The real human is the soul which is immortal.

Timaios And The Creation Of The Universe

Timaios is one of the dialogues of Plato, which the great philosopher wrote in his latest years. It is a continuation of “About Town” or “About Justice” and after that, Kritias should be read, at least the fragment that is has survived to us. Another title for Timaios is “About Nature”. It was the main text of cosmology till 13th century, when the Physics and Metaphysics of Aristotle were discovered. The first two parts have been survived in latin and the third in hellenic. Plato uses Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics, Pathology, Cosmology and Metaphysics in his dialogue.

Plato and Personal Daimon

Plato, the student of Socrates has written many interesting books of philosophy. One of the most well known is Timaios. Among a lot of interesting things Plato writes about the soul and the personal daimon, the spirit that we call today guardian angel was called agathodaimon, meaning a good spirit.

Plato, Timaios 90:

Theurgy and Philosophy are two different methods which lead to the union with God.
